I just started a design for SCE that should help eliminate some of these power outages. They are proposing to upgrade one of their feeders to BVS with covered conductor which would eliminate the need to turn off the power during high winds. They are doing this all over the mountain btw.
bullet SCM ALERT🚨 on Friday 18 October 2019 - 01:19:13
Good to see you Sun Diego. Glad everything worked out during the fires. We haven't lost power up in Big Bear yet, however, we have been warned that it could happen if SCE kills the power running up to Big Bear. More Santa Ana winds coming Sun-Tue. Hoping not bad enough to turn off the power. I am ready with generator in hand just in case

Hello out there all 400 plus of you. Thought I would sign in just to say hello.
I got my tax bill too and paid it. I live in San Diego so I am happy to pay it. We had a fire on both sides if the street a few blocks away and the center divider was touched by it which looks like two fires were started. Both were going up hill towards houses. Fire department did an amazing job. No houses hurt. No people hurt. My power was off for 30 min, but we were notified it was out and would be out for 4 hours. Wonderful job. I am happy to support all of the employees in San Diego and the work they do for us.

Got my property tax bill couple days ago and have to say I'm fairly pissed off. CSD services provided now in no way comparable to before so reduction of services with NO deduction in tax bill. Seems some Americans threw some tea in a harbor for similar BS. Thanks for not nothing CSD

Open letter to BBCSD
Hoping that Big Bear City will enact a new area where those of us who can’t use the new trash bins because of being part-timers and not wanting to leave it out from Sunday to Tuesday for animals to tip can use when we leave to drop off our trash in a safe place. Especially since we are paying for it on our taxes and only use it occasionally Please just a thought. Transfer station put some dumpsters out front for easier drop off or the main office could have some dumpsters for us to use Thanks

Felt bad for the driver. Gotta be the worst! He was doing his best but obviously had never been up 18 and had NO idea how sharp that upper hairpin really is.
bullet BootsNBridles on Wednesday 16 October 2019 - 21:02:35
Anyone hear anything about the semi stuck on the hairpins this morning? I was a few cars back. Watched the non-thinking person in front of me try to pass a car so she could squeeze through. (no chance!) That car blocked her or it could have been worse!

Wow, I have come through the snow valley passing lanes at a fairly high rate of speed in my younger days and when had the sports car. You have to be doing something completely moronic and stupid to do what this idiot just pulled off. I do hope that no one died or seriously hurt. CHP, you need to do something about the speed issues continually happening that last couple of years. Could be you coming around that corner next time.

As far as BVES wiring goes, up here in Surgarloaf it looks like something out of the 1800's with wires running every which way, My house is fed from a spice off of wires down the middle of the street. I would much prefer if it all was underground.

I'll try to find the legal discussion on this and repost it here.

Benny ⭐
Oct 18 : 09:50pm
Naw, it's specific to the threat, could be anywhere from hours to days. In our area it would generally be less than 24 hrs. Up in norcal they had had a multiday event so the outage duration followed.

BootsNBridles
Oct 18 : 08:53pm
This is not just a few hours folks. The new law prescribes very specific actions that a power company must follow once they've shut down. None of those actions can take place in a few hours- more like a few days.

ButlerPeakFire - What took them so long to getting around to figuring out they needed to upgrade their system to be less prone to starting fires during conditions that we've been seeing, well....forever?

ButlerPeakFire
Oct 18 : 08:42pm
BVS follows SCE standards and works with the same contract design firms. Mine being one of them. They are currently starting to upgrade their systems for covered conductor. This should help strengthen their system against outages and phase to phase arcing that can create wildfires.

Benny ⭐
Oct 18 : 08:24pm
Yeah, it's all more or less the same thing... thankfully, we don't get the real strong Santa ana winds as in the valleys, passes and canyons.

Charles
Oct 18 : 08:23pm
Oh, I forgot about BVES. Thsts the same thing Edison has going. I think its being mandated by the PUC. Two weeks ago Edison had lots of warnings and some turn offs. This week there are warnings but not in this area. Some in San Berdo though.

Benny ⭐
Oct 18 : 08:01pm
We're not SCE, we're Bear Valley Electric Service (Big Bear Valley). This is the new standard to try and prevent the ignition of wildfires during times of high fire danger.

It's a proactive approach to protect life & property. [Click Here]

0n the Edison outage information web page, I dont see any of our nearby areas currently being considered for wind related shutdowns. Am I wrong.

rsbruce
Oct 18 : 07:29pm
I am a bit concerned that people are "normalizing" the behavior of the power company's potential shutdown of our power by comparing that to TRUE preparedness for disasters! This is a power company created crisis, NOT a natural disaster.

Benny ⭐
Oct 18 : 07:21pm
Remember we went through this same fire drill less than a week ago and power wasn't cut, this will be a weaker Santa Ana event, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Always be prepared just in case!
