Trout Derby is on Saturday, opening day. Could be a good thing since the weather isn't exactly glorious so less crowds? Also I assume they stock for this.

the only problem, depending on your point of view, with my cat is, sometimes when I wake up in the morning, and put on my shoes, there is a smiling gopher looking at me.

Cat bombs have already enlisted and are ready to report for duty. I'm loading them into their landing craft this morning and they will hit the beaches as part of the initial assault when we arrive at the cabin later today.

bullet BaughHumbug on Friday 26 May 2017 - 06:20:13
Re: Gophers - - - We had good luck depositing our cat's used clumped litter pee-pee "bombs" down the holes. Apparently, the gophers don't like their nests/tunnels befouled with another creature's scent. Might be worth a try.

Right now we are only part-time at the cabin so I'm afraid the gophers would play while the cats were away. Also, they are indoor cats...pretty proficient at spiders and even a mouse once. I don't know how they would cope with something the size of a gopher. The small female is quite the huntress. The large male not so much.

I live in the desert, My cat is prolific at catching gophers.Perhaps a cat might be the answer...
bullet Cap'n Crunch on Thursday 25 May 2017 - 20:52:00
I have chipmunks and gray squirrels that I wouldn't want to hurt but otherwise no pets in the immediate vicinity. There used to be a cat that wandered through occasionally but I haven't seen him recently. As much as I might enjoy HIBs's approach, it would be a little over the top for BB. Razz's strategy of progressive assaults sounds promising. Thanks for all the recommendations!

Off topic but i have family coming up for the weekend to rimforest, big focus is fishing lake gregory. Any of you rimforest folks have any fishing advice? I can tell you all about fishing big bear but ive never fished gregory...

My solution from my time in oregon: self igniting plumber's torch, 3 feet of hose. Put hose in hole, turn on, wait five minutes, then hit the button. Whole 15x15 garden lifted about 4 inches up. It was so cool, i did it six or eight more times at night, cause the flame jets showed me where every last hole was. That method could get, uh, problematic around here...

The Black Box is what I use for gophers.

I have ground squirrels, wood rats, and voles, as well. I haven't found a good solution for the voles, other than the dog; she gets one occasionally. The dog is pretty good at catching the rats, as well. Trapping works fairly well for the ground squirrels.

Short of sitting out in the yard with a pellet gun or shovel waiting we have found a combination of things to help. We usually start with the gopher bombs. As least that one is a little fun. then we go to poison pellets but only if no animals around that can get secondary poisoning. Then we go to traps. We started using a product called Gopher Scram and have had some surprising success with it. We have also used a device that will hook up the truck exhaust to garden hose and run the truck for an hour with hose in the holes. Like woodpeckers have to keep options open and use a variety of things. good hunting Elmer

My German Shepherd has scored two gophers in the last year. Just lies and waits by the hole and when they appear he pounces and of course they are crushed by 80 pounds. Before the dog I tried everything, even shoved dog poop down the holes and the gophers just tossed it out!

In the immortal words of the greatest gopher hunter ever, Carl Spackler “You got to get into this dude's pelt and crawl around for a few days. Who's the gopher's ally. His friends. The harmless squirrel and the friendly rabbit.”

Thanks MGJ. Lot's of ideas but also lots of work. My neighbor's yard is infested so we need to attack on at least two fronts. It sounds like I need to enlist as many allies as I can find to join in the assault.

There is a vegetation fire in the Beaumont area. Last report (old) was 50 acres. They ordered up a bunch of air tankers so I am assuming that is where they are headed. Otherwise, nothing else to report from scanners.

I was only in first grade but I remember the announcement made at lunch break. Even as young as that it made in impression as he had just visited the the navy base we lived at just a few months previous, was my first motorcade experience. It has always been one of my most vivid memories of childhood and I can see both her and him just have a special presence about them that left an impression on a very young boy. This would have been a very different world had that day in Dallas had not happened.
