Happy Thursday

I love the night show. Mornings aren't too shabby either. Very entertaining. Thanks everyone.

Gotta love the Night Show guys. One admits to sleeping on the job and the other thinks he is Bob Vila. They are great!

Wishing all a good morning. It is almost 0415, how can you sleep in so long? I am just jealous! Have a good day!

Nite all and a good morning to Goat and John. Keep 'em entertained and they will come back.

Craig and Benny, if I am overstepping my authority as the unofficial membership recruiter, just let me know and I'll knock it off.
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 01:01:47
Appears I have shamed 9 lurkers away. It is easy and free to register and then you can offer your two cents whenever you like. Between this site and the scanner, both offered for free, this costs a lot of money. If you enjoy it, contribute to it.

I don't know if they can tell how many are people and how many are robots? If they are people it is much easier to navigate the site if you are a member. Just the red dots on threads you haven't read yet would save a lot of time.
And I'm sure there were a few screaming out a better way to help SD and they could have just typed it in
bullet bills grandson on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:56:52
I Tore out some one time to put in grab handles in a bathroom and patched it with drywall A friend who was a painter helped me paint the ceiling, over popcorn then shot glitter into it. Looked nice but was a mess for a long time
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:55:18
I am in now way the paid membership recruiter. Just feel it is one of my obligations being a member of Socalmountains.com.
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:52:27
I just don't have any experience with lath and plaster.
bullet bills grandson on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:50:42
If it is to thin to put in a piece of drywall you can screw some chicken wire in and just build up the plaster. Do it in steps because it will crack if you go to thick. I agree with the popcorn unless you have someone who can do it. After it is finished every time you look at it you will see any mistake.

87 of you are lurking. Register and become a member and contribute to the site you obviously like or you wouldn't be lurking.
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:41:47
SD, popcorn is good in the belly, but not on ceilings, although it is good for acoustics.
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:39:52
Thanks, I will ask again on my next project.
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:37:12
If you have lath, the original ceiling is plaster, not drywall. Now the problem is getting the new patch to match the existing plaster thickness. If you can get it close, you can just mud over it, maybe two or three times, to build up to the existing ceiling level.
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:37:08
Thanks again,
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:36:21
Its a craftsman type lath and plaster house. I did not think of dry wall. But it would work easy.if I take the popcorn off. the plaster was over the lath.
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:32:50
Oh Yeah, just screw a new piece of drywall to the lath, tape and mud, and you're good to go.
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:30:46
PS, I am not a licensed contractor, nor bonded and insured. Use my comments at your own risk. It has worked for me in the past, before they had those mesh sheets that BGS is talking about.
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:27:52
I have lath showing, I can screw right into that if I pre drill a hole.
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:25:14
I might help to pre-drill the existing drywall ceiling. It will attach those filler strips easier and make it easier to get the head of the drywall screw below the surface of the existing ceiling.
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:24:18
Then with a little paint no one sees the repair. I have a new roof so the problem is not coming back in my life time.
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:23:22
BG I know I have to let dry wall mud dry and shrink and do it again and again until its almost flat then use the screen or a damp sponge to make it smooth.
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:19:53
Yes, I could do that. Thanks
bullet bills grandson on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:19:02
Not sure your situation but there is a mesh you can put in and mix your own plaster thick. It might take several times to get it filled. If there is a hole I have used a piece of wood on a string and plaster to that then when dry cut the string. That works on walls never did it on a ceiling. I don't know how you will ever get popcorn to match. you might need to get someone who knows what they are doing
bullet RetiredRedHat on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:18:12
First, get rid of the popcorn. It's a little messy, but t will scrape right off. They the drywall can just be repainted. As for the hole in the ceiling, you can take a couple of pieces of drywall, slide them inside the hole, and screw them from the bottom of the ceiling so there is a ledge there to attach a piece of drywall to.
Does that make sense?
bullet Sun Diego on Friday 16 January 2015 - 00:12:41
I was a camp manager for a camp by Jenks Lake and now I am retired and like you two, I am fixing up my house. I put it off while I was working. I still come to Bens picnic and hike San G with my dog once in a while.
