If you haven't participated, and you have a VHF and/or UHF transceiver, listen on the Simplex frequencies. I believe the rules may require avoiding the National Calling frequencies, e.g. 146.52 and 446.00 MHz. Everything above 50 MHz is fair game.
Of course, if you have a multi-mode radio that covers VHF/UHF frequencies, by all means get on SSB and CW. Two meters usually has the most activity, mostly around 144.200 MHz, but calling right on that frequency is frowned upon.
There probably will be people on the Big Bear repeater who can answer any questions.
A contact exchanges calls, signal reports and 4 character grid squares (Maidenhead).
Always listen more than you talk: "Better to be an elephant than an alligator."
For this activity, "mountain topping" is a popular activity. If you're in Big Bear, guess what!
BTW, it's usually referred to as the "June VHF Contest". "I was goin' faster than I'd ever gone before, when I fell off." - 'Little' from "Little Faus and Big Halsey" "Microsoft is very sorry." - David Pogue, "The Missing Manual" series, Vista edition "Don't bother me; I'm clinging to my guns and Religion." - bc
