Since we don't have a "Spring" forum, I'm gonna put this here.
It must be Spring - the blue birds are looking for a place to nest. I took this photo yesterday.

The prefer open fields with lots of things to perch on, so the fires have been good for increasing their numbers in the mountains. These are Western Bluebirds. We have seen, once or twice, mountain bluebirds that are a brighter, more uniform sky blue. They seem to be much shier that the Western.

That fits in with what I have seen, R. They hang out near the big, open area between the village and the Forest Falls turnoff. That is a great place for lots of critters. It is an area protected as wildlands by the Redlands Water Dist. and has lots of wild berries for them.

Of course it is also a huge fire hazard for MHV, but we are not allowed to do anything about it.

If you provide them with a house, they will set up a nest pretty quick and provide you with 2-4 batches of babies in a single summer. The entire clan sticks together for the first year, with the earlier babies helping to raise the later babies, so your clan can build to quite a few!

I have a bird house like the one in the photo but have never had a bird use it for the last 10 pluss years.

The two missing female hikers in the San Gorgonio Wilderness have been located, safe at the Vivian Creek trailhead.

Full S&R response has now been initiated for missing bicyclist, Jamie Geiger, on the 18 between Big Bear and Lucerne Valley.
