Saturday Dec 16 dinner review.. very good to excellent.. Place was very busy.

invited our friends to Fawnskin to attend the Pink Floyd (tribute) concert at the Cave. Got a reservation for 6:15 and got right to the table.

Food was very good, fish n chips, chicken scaloppini, ribs and the Korean beef bowl with strip steak. Service was acceptable given the full restaraunt and party upstairs. Price was reasonable for the village!

Quite an extensive menu that requires us to return to try other items. I would recommend it but get a reservation.. busy place!

We went to Oakside tonight.

I had read the dreadful Yelp reviews but noted that the bad comments were all centered on poor service, not the food. Allowing that the place had just opened and staff was new, we decided to give it a try. The staff was very aware of the Yelp reviews.

Excellent service, good variety to the menu, great atmosphere in the downstairs dining area, and decent prices.

That is why I will not review a newly opened restaurant for at least 3 months. They need a "shakedown" cruise.

We shared an appetizer; Mary had the lobster and I had the Ahi with a glass of nice Riesling each. Of special note was the pan-fried white corn as a vegetable side. We enjoyed a shared pomegranate syrup drizzled cheesecake for dessert.

Yes, we will go back!

We had dinner at the Oakside restaurant tonight. A good feeling permeated the place…people just enjoying themselves!

Three comments on the delicious meal:
1. I ordered the Macadamia Crusted Filet of Hawaiian Monchong (an Oakside ‘Signature Dish’) which was noted as ‘seasonal’. Evidently, this was not the season as Halibut was served in the place of Monchong.
2. We ordered the Big Cheesecake Brulee, described as ‘Hand fired New York cheesecake dusted with powdered sugar’. What was served was a normal slice of cheesecake topped with whipped cream! No sign of ‘brulee’ at all! I was told that that was the way it was delivered?
3. A high side note: We each ordered a glass of ‘The Seeker’ Riesling (Mosel River, Germany) which was truly a fine Mosel wine.

Delicious food but read the menu carefully and send it back if not as described.

Good to know! Your server should have told you about those changes and given you a choice to order something different. They've been open long enough now that you can't really call it just kinks from being new. Sounds like more training is needed. It's relatively easy to be a regular run-of-the-mill restaurant but it requires a bit extra to be considered fine dining. I am hopeful they'll get on top of this! It's a great location and a welcome addition to the town!

JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER FOR TRAVELERS... DON'T ALWAYS TRUST YOUR MAPPING APPS & STAY ON DESIGNATED HIGHWAYS. RESCUE PERSONNEL HAS HAD TO PULL SEVERAL PEOPLE OUT OF FOREST SERVICE ROADS GETTING STUCK OR IN ACCIDENTS. GOOGLE MAPS HAS BEEN RE-ROUTING VISITORS FROM GREEN VALLEY LAKE TO FAWNSKIN VIA CRAB FLATS ROAD-3N16/2N12. THESE ROADS CAN BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS IN THE SUMMER DURING NORMAL CONDITIONS!!!

Thanks for the heads up NannyBear... Maybe a little snow tonight before the bigger snow storm tomorrow afternoon/evening. NWS has gone as far as issuing a Winter Storm Warning for tomorrow. Never seems to end around here this year

The 3.5 'bed tax' must be a local thing in Big Bear. Nobody's sent us a bill. The only tax we pay is the Lodging Tax to SB County.

You know they are heavy. I’ve been carrying them around for weeks now. People ask me, “What’s that?” I say Ben told me to carry chains. Can I just keep ‘em in the trunk of my chicken?

But we could see a few snow showers or flurries this evening. Roads getting icy once again as temps drop so drive safe and ALWAYS carry chains. Can't say that enough but people still don't seem to get it.
