The video’s timestamp shows that at around 6 pm on Wednesday, a man in a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and blue t-shirt underneath walked into the Best One insurance agency in Garden Grove, California.

The man initially appears to be carrying a small over-the-shoulder knapsack.

He then approaches the front desk, where a woman is sitting near a computer.

On August 7, 2019, Zachary Castaneda, who is a gang member, went on a stabbing spree killing four people and wounded two others across two Southern California cities. He had been out on bail for a charge last month of carrying a concealed dagger.

Castaneda killed two people in an apartment complex he used to live in. According to the police the surveillance cameras caught some of the carnage.

“We have a video showing him attacking these people and conducting these murders.”

He also robbed a bakery, where the owner, Dona Beltran, avoided a potentially violent confrontation because she was in her car charging her mobile phone. She told the police that she saw the man get out of a Mercedes and went into the business. She followed him inside to offer help but when she saw him try to open the cash register she kept quiet and ran out of the shop yelling she was getting robbed. She took refuge in a nearby dental office and Castaneda ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about $200, she said.

Updates on the SoCal stabbing spree: Police say the suspect, Zachary Castaneda, was gang member who was released early from prison as result of A.B. 109, an initiative to cut state prison population.

Castaneda also robbed an insurance business, where he stabbed a 54-year-old employee severally but is expected to survive. An alarm company saw the robbery on a live television feed and called the police. According to the police he fled with cash and also robbed a check-cashing business next door.

He then drove to Chevron station where he attacked a 44-year-old man pumping gas “for no reason.”
The undercover detectives tracked his silver Mercedes to the parking lot of the 7-Eleven in Santa Ana and within a minute the man emerged from the store, carrying a large knife and the gun he had cut from the belt of a security guard after stabbing him. He was ordered to drop his weapons and he complied and was arrested.

One of the victims, Helmuth Hauprich, 62, was described by his son, Erwin Hauprich as a hard-working immigrant originally from Romania. Hauprich said his father called him on Wednesday and told him his Garden Grove apartment had been burglarized. His passport, green card, sword collection and even a dining table were taken. He added that his father never called back and he went to check on him after hearing there had been a stabbing at the complex. He said that he was told by a police officer that his father had been taken to hospital where he died and that even his father’s roommate was also killed in the apartment.

He stabbed a 54-year-old employee at an insurance business. According to a surveillance video released on Thursday it shows a man in a hoodie entering the office, confronting the woman as she sits at a desk, then suddenly pulling two knives — one of which appears to be a butcher knife — and stabbing at her at least a dozen times as she throws up her hands to defend herself. The woman then gets up and runs into a corner, blocking the man by putting two chairs between them. He then appears to steal something from the office and leaves.

He also attacked a man at a Chevron station. According to the lieutenant the man was stabbed in the back and “his nose was nearly severed off his face.” He was hospitalized in stable condition.

The police said she was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. According to the Orange County coroner’s office, he had also killed a man identified as Robert Parker, 58, of Orange, who died at the 7-Eleven in Santa Ana.

The officials said that Pascual Rioja Lorenzo, 39, of Garden Grove, who worked at a nearby Subway restaurant, also had been fatally stabbed during a robbery.
Zachary Castaneda Criminal History

Castaneda has a long criminal record which includes prison stints for possession of meth for sale while armed with an assault rifle and car theft. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he was released on probation in January 2016 after serving about two years of a four-year sentence.

In July 2019 he was arrested and charged with having a concealed dagger and drug charges. At the time he was out on bail for his June arrest on charges of street gang vandalism.

In 2009 he had been convicted of spousal abuse and paroled after serving about a year in prison. He was released from parole in that case in 2014.

Wow, I have come through the snow valley passing lanes at a fairly high rate of speed in my younger days and when had the sports car. You have to be doing something completely moronic and stupid to do what this idiot just pulled off. I do hope that no one died or seriously hurt. CHP, you need to do something about the speed issues continually happening that last couple of years. Could be you coming around that corner next time.

As far as BVES wiring goes, up here in Surgarloaf it looks like something out of the 1800's with wires running every which way, My house is fed from a spice off of wires down the middle of the street. I would much prefer if it all was underground.

I'll try to find the legal discussion on this and repost it here.

Naw, it's specific to the threat, could be anywhere from hours to days. In our area it would generally be less than 24 hrs. Up in norcal they had had a multiday event so the outage duration followed.

Oct 18 : 08:53pm
This is not just a few hours folks. The new law prescribes very specific actions that a power company must follow once they've shut down. None of those actions can take place in a few hours- more like a few days.

ButlerPeakFire - What took them so long to getting around to figuring out they needed to upgrade their system to be less prone to starting fires during conditions that we've been seeing, well....forever?

Oct 18 : 08:42pm
BVS follows SCE standards and works with the same contract design firms. Mine being one of them. They are currently starting to upgrade their systems for covered conductor. This should help strengthen their system against outages and phase to phase arcing that can create wildfires.

Yeah, it's all more or less the same thing... thankfully, we don't get the real strong Santa ana winds as in the valleys, passes and canyons.

Oct 18 : 08:23pm
Oh, I forgot about BVES. Thsts the same thing Edison has going. I think its being mandated by the PUC. Two weeks ago Edison had lots of warnings and some turn offs. This week there are warnings but not in this area. Some in San Berdo though.

We're not SCE, we're Bear Valley Electric Service (Big Bear Valley). This is the new standard to try and prevent the ignition of wildfires during times of high fire danger.

It's a proactive approach to protect life & property. [Click Here]

0n the Edison outage information web page, I dont see any of our nearby areas currently being considered for wind related shutdowns. Am I wrong.

Oct 18 : 07:29pm
I am a bit concerned that people are "normalizing" the behavior of the power company's potential shutdown of our power by comparing that to TRUE preparedness for disasters! This is a power company created crisis, NOT a natural disaster.

Remember we went through this same fire drill less than a week ago and power wasn't cut, this will be a weaker Santa Ana event, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Always be prepared just in case!
