Dear Bear Valley Unified School District Families and Staff,
As we complete the final two weeks of this school year, I am certain you are wondering what the 2020-
2021 school year will look like for our students. Thank you to those of you who completed the
Reopening School/Distance Learning Survey, participated in focus groups, and served on the Reopening
School Advisory Committee. Your valuable input helped us with the decision making process. Your
support during this time has been key to our students’ success!
As we make final decisions, we realize that keeping our students and staff safe is of the utmost
importance; therefore, I contacted the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the San Bernardino County
Department of Public Health (SBDPH) for guidance on Tuesday, June 1, 2020. Our preliminary plans
were shared and SBDPH gave us the assurance that, although we could not adhere to the six feet physical
distancing recommendation, we could proceed with implementing the 100% Students Return to Class
Scenario with our suggested restrictions

Although we will not be able to provide six feet of physical distancing due to space limitations in
classrooms, we will place desks and tables as far apart as possible, facing students forward in class. Staff
and students will be provided protective masks or face shields from the school district. Staff and students
will wear masks in the hallways when transitioning to areas in the building that are outside of their
classrooms and will wear masks on the bus. Students will not be required to wear masks during the class
period. Physical education class, sports and extra curricular activities will be limited or modified until we
receive further guidance from the California Department of Education. Sanitization and wellness
monitoring will be key to the success of our safe return and these areas will be addressed in our
Reopening School Plan which will be posted on the District website by the end of next week.

For families that are concerned about returning to school for health reasons, we will continue to provide
the Distancing Learning option through Bear Valley Virtual Academy (BVVA). This program provides
an excellent online education with virtual instruction and the opportunity to meet 1:1 with the BVVA
teacher. For further details, please contact Dottie Jaeger at 909-866-4631 (choose option 4).

It is important to realize that our plans are fluid. If COVID 19 data spikes in our community, we may be
required to modify this plan and implement a hybrid educational model with fewer students on campus.
At this time we are hopeful that our community continues to stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,
Dr. Mary Suzuki,
Superintendent of Schools
Bear Valley Unified School District

I'm good with it. I can tell you that my boys staying confined for well over a month did more mental harm to them. While I do believe COVID does has some sort of risk what ever that may be, getting these kids back to a somewhat normal life is important to me. Second, they drive me nuts being at home all that time.

NOT socially distancing, NOT wearing masks in confined spaces seems to me to be willfully ignoring the safety and health of students and staff.

I know this will most likely piss off a few parents, but if classroom physical size is an issue and they can't reduce the number of kids per class, with still having the virtual academy available why not split the class in half and have half in class the other half at home then switch it either every other day (probably big scheduling problem) or every other week (probably a bigger scheduling problem). Might be better than alternative and having everyone home or mashed together. The kids do need to interaction with each other. I am sure they are fed up with adults as much as the adults are with them . Thoughts.

The school district has a plan and if it works... good. Protect yourself how you see fit and I will do the same.

Yes, should be real interesting to try and force kinder and elementary students to wear masks, what a joke. This has gone on far enough. If you are rooting or looting or demonstrating, the rules for social distancing don't need to be applicable.

Seems to me back in the 90s the school district had a similar problem with class over crowding and for about 3 years they went to a staggered ABC track schedule. It was set up so that only 2 tracks were actively in the school room while the 3rd was on 'break'. One way to reduce class size and allow further separation?? And the down side of that, there were many mornings while getting ready to head out for work, looking behind me and saying 'WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE???'. Im on break dad. didn't you read the calendar

Thx Craig/SCM for facilitating the integrity check with the USFS/SBNF in regards to that (bogus) message I found yesterday. Much appreciated.

Benny thx for your input too. I didn't want to jump to any conclusions, but didn't know how else to get any feedback from an authoritative source that could validate/denounce.
