Greetings.
Can anyone help answer a winter-time question? In winter months, with regular snowfall and snow drifts, what is the prevailing wind direction on the south side of the lake?

In other words, if you live in a building that is oriented squarely north-south, on which side of the building do you get the largest accumulation of snow drifts each winter? thank you.

I looked for historical weather information of this type, but could not find a definitive answer. I have observed that in summer months, the wind direction seems to come from southwest most of the time, but I do not know if this is common in winter. Thanks.

Hey BassistVince!

The predominant wind direction during the winter is from the west, (ie southwest, west or northwest) so your drifts would tend to be on the east side (leeward side).

We do get our Santa Ana's which can flip the flow from the northeast, but that is typically a dry flow without precip.

In the Summer the predominant direction is from the east, but obviously we don't receive snow in the summer.

Hope that helps!

Thank you very much for the helpful and kind information. My question seems oddly specific (in hindsight).

Thanks Toddy. I saw your beautiful and amazing pics. We will have two different pairs of binoculars. I know that it's getting higher in the sky each night, but the Astronomy reports I saw said last week it was at maximum brightness and that it's going to keep fading from now. I'm looking forward to tonight. Thanks for your tips and suggestions.

@Doug -- FYI: the comet may be faint to see with the naked eye tonight. But it will get better going into next week. My first time looking for it (4a last Friday morning) I was able to see it with just my eyes. It was a bit hard to see it with my eyes last night, but my camera could pick it up. (old eyes)

MMMMmmmm burritos!!

I saw Comet Hale-Bopp up here in 97 and it was very bright! I also saw Comet Hyakutaki up here in early 96. I was working at Summit and remember discussing the Comet with Captain John who was operating Demozine rental shop at Summit Base. Great memories!

Benny and McToddy,

Many thanks to you both for posting info about Comet Neowise. My GF has never seen a comet and I am very excited to show it to her tonight from the East Valley.

Going to be a long end of the week. Spent 55 minutes in line at DIY, another 20 at the bank, hour and half at verizon store and another 45 at stater (shouldn't have asked for the deli burrito ). I guess my life is now waiting in lines??

@spice and doo - thx. Doo, im glad you were able to get the settings from the metadata. Let me know if you have any questions. The evening view should get progressively better going into next week as the comet (when it first becomes visible around 9) will be higher, meaning that it will be in the sky longer (ie when it gets darker) before it drops under the horizon. To snap a pic, you'll most likely need to do a long exposure. Anything longer than 1/60th of second will need a tripod or have the camera sitting on something. Also, if your camera has a 2 second delay (between pushing the button and the shutter actually triggering), use that feature. It will isolate camera movement from your finger press to allow the camera to settle before opening the shutter
