Hi all,
I recently obtained a well preserved copy of the August 27, 1921 issue of the Big Bear Life newspaper. For everyone's enjoyment and comments, I took high resolution photographs of each of the 4 pages (front, two inside and back) and posted them in the "Historical Photos" section of the Photo/Media Gallery. Each page consists of 2 photos, top and bottom, and will take a while to download in full resolution when you click on the reduced-size photo. It'll be worth it, as it is quite readable in full resolution.

I particularly like Bill Knickerbocker's call for men to help remove lakeside logs on Wednesdays and how each camp lists their guests for that week. Something that would be impossible to do today.

If you want to view this paper in person, I'll be donating this paper to the BB Historical Society next week, so check with the museum this summer. Enjoy.

Thanks for sharing that, Johnny! It was cool to look through! One interesting thing I noticed - the ads didn't list any contact information for the person - I guess you just asked for them in town?

Very nice thanks for posting this. I just downloaded it and will check it all out.

phones were still very rare on the hill and places that had them would have probably been reached by an exchange. I have some stuff somewhere that lists phone numbers such as 26.
the mansion never had a dial phone untill we moved in during the 60's. There was an old kind with the earpiece and microphone seperate. I don't know when it was last used. I know my grandfather stayed there at times in the 50's. Could be he went without a phone or would come to our house if needed
I have a letter that came to my father in Big Bear that was addressed to him in Redlands. I don't think it was stamped to forward it. Other letters the P.O. sent to him when there were just questions . I guess they would get letters and send them to they thought they could help the people. It was common to have mail delivered by name and town only It was a very very small town.

I don't know if I have any full papers this old but will look around.
thanks again

Eurosteel's family's first telephone in Big Bear was a party line with ten families on it! What a gossip center!

I remember party lines! The feed into my mother's paranoia perfectly! She was always convinced everyone was listening to our conversations. I could never figure out why they would.

I particularly like the little story on the bottom of page 2:

"The charming garden of hollyhocks, pansies and other brightly colored flowers in front of the Lunde home at their camp is a joy to flower lovers."

Even minor stuff like, "Mrs. Sarah Stocker, owner of Swastika, made a business trip to Redlands recently" was considered newsworthy.

It took me years to track down Swastika lodge. Turned out I lived right across the street from it. But we just called the cabins that were left stockers. It was located on Knickerbocker across from blue bird lodge. There was a large building that was our "haunted house" as a kid. we would dare each other to go in. in the front yards there were some large blocks of granite. of course they were tombstones to us.
lunde's camp was at the bottom of red ant hill . I was reading something on them yesterday. I have to start writing stuff down.

after seeing an ad in the paper I had to look this up
I wonder why it never caught on?

this was the code my grandfather had to use to call from the pine knot lodge in 1913. Probably still the only phone on the hill beside the one at the dam
John Fisher was one of my grandfathers partners in the pine knot lodge.
There is a book called "fun with fritz" that has much on Big Bear. I have a bunch of letters from him and he was a real shifty bussinesman.
My grandfather once told a friend that he had 4 bottles of whiskey in the basement sitting ona foundation wall. One for each of the partners that screwed him over. He would drink each when that man died. When we cleaned out the basement there were no bottles left.

a bit late to the party.. you don't need the waiver to ride the sky chair if you are walking. Only bike riders need the waiver. The walk down is a different path this year and steeper.
