It is my understanding that at one time the airport in the valley was located somewhere in the Moonridge area. My guess would be that it would have been located around what is now the northern end of the golf course. Does anyone know exactly where it was located?
I know that in the 50's the eastern portion of the airport was displaced perhaps 1500 feet by what was the old Peter Pan Drive-In.
The golf course was at the airport. It's Richards understanding the military developed the airport during World War 11. The thought was what would they do if say.. John Wayne airport was taken over by the Japanese. So they built Big Bear Airport. Nevada was to far away.

planes were landed near where the veterans park is now. where moonridge road is. and at the airport which used to extend from about where the road next to thelma's is to about 1/4 mile west.
there were plans at one time to have an airport in cactus flats
of course planes have been landed all over the hillside and the lake but they don't count. I believe one of the first few flights ended in the lake

I thought I read somewhere that for a time there was an airport near where the old drive-in theater is. That location was used because it was closer to the village. I have no idea where I read that though, so I'd have trouble looking it up to verify.

Per Tom Core, 1946-47, a small runway was established west of the modern Tail of the Whale Lakeside Lounge during an extremely low water level period by a man named Sammy Mason. Apparently it was called the Village Airport. Work Smart Kid!

The current airport extends to Greenaway Drive. At one time the old Peter Pan Drive-in was there. When the drive-in closed the runway was extended.

the one core mentioned was the one at the veterans park.I was just East of the boat house. This picture shows a swim beach. but the planes used the area where the cars are parked. there are pictures with planes on the ground that will I'm sure be posted soon they only landed here for a few years
you can click on the picture download it and can see how town was laid out back then.
planes landing when the drive in was in bear city coming in from the East wouldfly over the north side of the drive in cross a dirt road and fence that ran along the the end of the airport before touching down. you could drive across the airport and planes might have to bus the strip to chase cows off (earlier in time) there was also a windsock that they would check.
I can remember when Dan McNeal would buzz town to let those at the store know he was back and needed a ride home if he had no car at the airport
