BSF you tell me, your the pilot. probably either hang near the building or head for the lake. I also remember they landed a sea plane. do you know where that was? Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

Their were 2 gals if I remember correctly their names were Mary & Myra thay had a couple of float planes one was a stager wing beach an the other was a taylorcraft an they gave sightseeing rides off the end of the Pine Knot landing in the late 1940s. towards the end of ww 2, or shortly after their were a couple of navy guys landed a PBY2 on the lake an they tried for a couple of days to get it back in the air but just diden't have enough horsepower to get flying,Charlie Stillwell along with some other people took their criscraft speed boats out in front of the PBY to chop up the water to help get it off the lake, that diden't work either. they finally took the wings off & hauled it down the hill on a truck. sorry meant to ask you how they did it. They used a similar setup on c-123's and c-130's to take off from short fields. While I have seen them land in very short fields they put some on reversed to stop the plane faster. it was a disaster as it fired to soon and crashed the plane. Not sure if they gave up on that idea Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

I still can in my mind never need a plane for that.
be sure to check out the thread on the "invading" burro's. Since you were part of it and have been around a little longer you know more about them then anyone else I know. I had heard that they used to land down in Horsethief years ago. Of course as with anything it is urban legend Fred that was doing it and did he have a clam on the property. I had not been down in 20 years sense the FS bulldozed the old cabin for what ever reason but I do remember a long straight away on the floor of the valley but it has been taken back over by brush. I would guess that if you had a dirt strip or open area it was an airport or opportunity to use.
This country needs thousands of unemployed politicians. If Obama is the answer how stupid was the question?

Tim and Kim Sweat of teh Historical Society are pretty good sources for info on the airports and other historical stuff. I recall hearing that the temporary landing strip (never was an official airport, I believe) near Pine Knot and teh lake was due to the lake being so low you could walk across most of it. Of course, that could never happen again as the water never goes down to Redlands any longer.
My understanding about the Moony airport was that it was built by Andy Devine to bring his Hollywood celebs to his Sportsman Lodge (now Captain's Anchorage).
