Does anyone remember the fox ranch business in Big Bear? It started in the early 1930's and went until 1954 or so. My mother, Virginia McDougald was the owner of the McDougald Fox Ranch. My brother Jerry, and I, Linda, went through school at the elmementary school and Big Bear High School.
Does anyone remember anything about Merle Caughron? He worked for the County Road Dept.

Linda McDougald

The fox business in Big Bear was a big deal for quite awhile. The silver fox was developed in the valley. I had a friend who worked a long time for a farm to get a pair to start his enterprise with them. Chinchilla's were also raised. They brought up burros to feed to the animals
The name Merle Caughron is familiar to me but I didn't know him. I knew a dawn but thought the name was spelled different. she might have been a different family.
I hope you can tell us more about the farms and possibly some pictures. We love them pictures

Was your brother Jerry a Building Inspector?

Sunflower25: I Lost track of your family about the time you started high school, I won't tell when that was. I remember Merle an your mother well. I was surprised when I herd your mom sold the property but as you well know everything changes in BB. most of the old timers have passed on, everything has a different name now, with new owners. I was plesantly surprised the last time we met, You are as pretty as your mother. BSF

I've heard that there may still be some treetop observation decks remaining, but in all my walks around the FF neighborhood (at least where I think the farms were located), I haven't seen any. Does anyone know if any still exists, and if so, where?

the last one I remember seeing was behind the hunter home just East of the nursrey on foxfarm. probably easiest to see it from starvation flats road. But I think it can be seen from fox farm. It may be gone now. most just had planks nailed to the tree to climb up and were around 30 feet or so in the air

A couple are still in the trees on Switzerland. Also on the forest service road for Pineknot campground some of the coops. Most of the Foxfarm area had been cut up into lots as you know. Might be one at the McAlister home or down close to the highway.

I believe the McAllister home does still have one. Tim & Kim Sweat did a show from there and showed it a few years back.

In thinking about it I believe there are two at hunters. one right behind the house and one way back that would be seen from starvation flats if it is still there.

I hope you guys get pictures of these historic places while they are still around. I got started late and missed out on a lot od shots I would have liked to get.
I think the round gazebo looking pen is still on the joad rumor mill spoke of fairly close to the campground east of summit
