Here is Fox Farm this morning. Took about 3 hours with a 8hp snowblower and my wife and son to clear just our deck and the lower part of our driveway.

1. View outside my office window.
2. My son tackling the deck.
3. Knocking down the 5 FOOT berm enough to get the snowblower on it.
4. Looking back up our driveway. The 2 ft you see is last night's accumulation (I plowed it clean last night).

is there a place I can get the official snow fall?

It looks to me in most places on the level it is about 3 1/2 feet plus about an inch of rain.
I don't want to start an argument and I know you guys have some deep snow and drifts. We used to have a number from the fire station is there still a source such as this or?

Re: 2010 Storm Pics
, Sun Jan 24 2010, 05:51PM

I have not seen anywhere in this valley that received only 3.5 feet of snow from these past storms.

Re: 2010 Storm Pics
HondaBabe, Sun Jan 24 2010, 06:00PM

This is what I've noticed on my and other rooftops and before the sun hit. I'm sure Summit got more cause they are higher up and as far as in the valley the snow drifts make it higher on level ground.

Re: 2010 Storm Pics
bills grandson, Sun Jan 24 2010, 08:34PM

I am going by the pictures I hav seen. Around interlaken it seems about 3 1/2 feet. Take a look at the pump house from fox farm.
They used to keep track behind the fire station and gave very accurate reports. had another near the dam. I don't think the weather stations I have seen are as acurate for snow as the old way.
still the best I have seen is a 2x4 in the ground. The house I grew up in would have almost nothing on the West side while 6 feet was not unusual on the East. unfortunatly the front door and parking area were on the East.
I would say this storm compares with the 69-70 storm although we were on the road quicker, and I had a VW. Couldn't get up to the big house the first night I hit the hill but managed the next. couldn't even try the driveway and had to dig a little hole to put the car in
in the mid 60's there was one worse as we had a storm almost this much snow then 3 days of rain then more snow. probably much bigger total that year then any I have seen when you add snow, and rain

Re: 2010 Storm Pics

Re: 2010 Storm Pics
Geezer, Sun Jan 24 2010, 08:57PM

BG, the last # that was "official" was 64 inches...however it seems that all of the usual equipment to record it is down...probably overwhelmed! Best estimate is between 5 and 6 feet. However, as you know, most of us took pictures AFTER the worst of it hit, so it was a heavy wet storm, wet snow, and it packed down quickly.

Re: 2010 Storm Pics
bills grandson, Sun Jan 24 2010, 09:49PM

who does the official count up there anymore. I know it used to be the Fire Station.
I know there are areas that got an auful lot of snow and it accumulates around buildings and such. I don't envy you guys in the least. I will dig out what pictures I can of 69 but in my memory they seem very similar, possibly a little less then this. I know one friend whose 5' chain link fence is gone and I guess it was about 9 inches deep as the snow started, and he is showing over 6 feet in one area.
to measure ir fairly there has to be one spot in various areas that is used every time. and something has to be in place to minimize drifting at th station location.
The old fire station was perfect as it was set out from the buildinggs and while it may measure 3 feet and you had 4 at least you knew that the ratio would be close everytime.
I am not sure how they did snow, peobably just a pole but rain was a larger container then the commen rain gauge of a weather station . Temperature was an old brass thermometer with a high and low marker pushed by mercury to get the daily temps. that was reset by a magnet. We had one of those that was broken over the years and thrown out. to bad it could have been fixed. and about the coldest I remember was around 20 below. often below zero on the walk to school. Lake was usually frozen solid by December solid enough to walk on if you were dumb enough.
sometime in the 40's or early 50's (perhaps earlier) they did snow tire, and chain testing on the lake it was so thick. Before refrigeration they would harvest ice to use later. There are pictures somewhere of them doing this in Baldwin lake.

Re: 2010 Storm Pics

it got to the point where I could not keep up. All I could do was clear the front of my house. I estimate about 5.5 ft just after the storm with settled snow.

Helen had asked in the chatbox the other day about how Treasure Island looked with the snow from this storm. We flew in Saturday afternoon and took a few shots as we passed TI. Here are two of them. To see the rest of them you can [Click Here] to see thumbnails, slide show and full size of all of the photos.

If you zoom in on the full size orginals you can spot some snow shoe tracks where someone was out on the ice near the bouy and walked over to the island and back. What an idiot!

What's the consensus on the slightly darker patches of 'ice'? Weaker, stronger, deeper, shallower, ... ?

I think the dark spots are either age spots or where the 5o ft long catfish travel and/or come up for air.
