New Drive Time (Traffic Feature)

SCM gang:

I have added a new feature on the left side of the site that shows you current drive times of the 3 major routes into Big Bear (2 entries per route - one for each direction). This uses google's traffic platform (which uses cellphone data) to determine current travel time between two points. Note that this new feature is in BETA and will become part of a larger effort that will integrate chain, road construction, and closure information in the coming weeks. I will also be adding other routes to the system: For Example, some folks would like to see the commute time for the Arctic Circle (IE Big Bear Dam to Snow Valley). That route will be coming very soon. I am also planning routes to the western part of the mountains (IE Running Springs, Lake Arrowhead, Crestline). You may see this platform format completely change over the coming weeks but I wanted to get something out there in Beta. I am also looking for suggestions on other routes that would be important to include in this traffic monitoring effort.

Note that the traffic platform is for reference only and should not be used for critical navigation. The data is updated every 15 minutes, however, cellphones used to calculate travel time on the google platform must complete driving the entire route before a calculation on travel time is made. So, a TC that happens at 1:30pm may not show delays on this platform until much later.

Would love to hear your comments, suggestions, and other things you would like to see. Now that we are integrating other realtime API's (programming interfaces), there are a lot of things we can do to provide you with the best information possible.

Thanks and take care!
-Craig

Nice... It's amazing what we can learn when the general populace is tracked at all times.

Craig - you are awesome!

Question though When you say "Big Bear" - is that Big Bear Lake? Big Bear City? Or a general, middle of the valley area?

Great Question Cammy. Here are the locations used in the current Traffic Feature:

BIG BEAR: Big Bear Blvd at Summit Blvd
HIGHLAND: Hwy 330 at the Junction of the 210
MENTONE: Hwy 38 at Mentone Blvd
LUCERNE: Hwy 18 at Hwy 247 (China Castle Restaurant is right there).

I will be adding a Fawnskin to Idaho feature just for you in the future!

We can tweak these, this was just what I used for the initial beta of the feature.
Thanks!

I already have an app on my phone that tells me the time to Idaho.
Thanks for the clarification on the locations!

When you say Hwy 38 at Mentone Blvd, I'm guessing that's about at Amethyst?
