Sears, K-Mart, and now Lowes
Delj, Tue Nov 06 2018, 05:23PM

Lowes has just announced a number of closures, about 4 - 5 in California.

K-Mart is quite bad off, financially worse than Sears. The Big Bear store appears quite busy and well-stocked but they are actually selling off existing inventory from other store closures. Nothing being added or reordered.

Serious questions arising about warranty support for Kenmore/Die Hard items already sold or to be sold.

Thanks Del. I did hear on the news that they were going to support all Sears warranty commitments regardless of how things go for the company. I just had sears up to fix my snowblower... No wonder its not snowing

Sears owns Kmart

Yes, but the K
-Mart portion may get sacrificed to save Sears.

If Sears/Kmart closes, rest assured another discount super store will end in its place, most likely a Walmart. Big Bear Kmart is one of the best performers in company. The Kenmore brand is likely going to be sold off along craftman and other highlights of Sears Brand.
Honestly, the last time I purchased something over $100 from either Sears or Kmart was 10 years ago.

But Lowes isn’t surprising, as hardware store they lack the edge of providing to professionals the way Home Depot or other lines can. Go to Home Depot in morning and see how many contractors are there, then head over Lowes. Also has my wife points out, Lowes has horrible customer service.
Sears had the infrastructure back in the early days of the internet and the name it could have been the Amazon of today. But they made bad business decisions.

Our basic BBV problem is lack of a full time population. Big stores want a large daily market. Our sole advantage is that the store would have no competition. Target???
I see that Staters is physically expanding.

Hope Staters expands its roster of cashiers as well.

Oh really? Did they gobble up a couple units adjoining them to the north? I rarely go in there so I dunno.... Just remember that it took forever to check out.

Yes, the north side is being expanded to allow bulk items.

OUR luck up here they would take that bldg and make it into a Dollar General, Big Lots, or some other subprime store.

There are Amazon stores. I don't know any locations. A Dollar General type is my guess.A public locally owned bank would likely return the most benefits to Big Bear.

If the local K-Mart closes, my personal preference would be a Target over a Walmart. I feel that much of the merchandise from Walmart tends to be a bit inferior compared to Target. BRING THE RED!

They who own the property must find a tenant that can pay the rent.. or they will sell the property. Anyone knows who owns the property?

Not necessarily there was a Kmart down here by us, it closed and the property owner entered into a contact with Home Depot to occupy it. The town folk ran Home Depot away so it sits vacant with a 24 hr guard and has been vacant for about 8 years +-. The owner of the property is a family trust and estimates by local real estate agents are that they are losing around $110-150K per month in lost revenue. Due to the town folks action the trust refuses to rent the eyesore and speculation is they just take a tax right off instead.

I think I remember that from the news.. eyesore indeed!

Should K-Mart shut it's doors, Subway and the quilt shop will be all that remain.

The Grizzly is reporting that the local KMart is up for auction in January. Whatever the winner opts to do, is up to them. It could remain a KMart, or not.

Down to the wire!
Sears Holdings Corp. is preparing to potentially wind down the iconic retailer after Chairman Eddie Lampert’s bid to buy several hundred stores out of bankruptcy fell short of bankers’ qualifications. While Lampert’s ESL Investments has failed to convince the bankers of the viability of its bid, it could still make last-minute improvements before a status hearing on Tuesday. Lampert also has outlined a back-up plan in which ESL would pursue the purchase of some of Sears’s parts, including real estate and intellectual property, such as its brand.

Looks like Kmart will now Liquidate....
There were 3 places that I shopped while I lived in Big Bear.... Butchers Block, Stater Bros & Kmart.
I remember when I first moved there in 1999..... Kmart had a nice selection of plants / yard decor. They had 1/2 oak barrels for 1/2 the cost of anybody and their plants were really inexpensive.
I really liked the BB Kmart !!
I hope somehow the doors will stay open with another "discount" retailer.... And hopefully they will include a very good selection of food.
In Huntington Beach, I remember when they built the Kmart.... and it was my go to store for all my childhood (that and whitefront and fedco). That Kmart was demolished and a Home Depot is now there.
R-I-P Kmart

Sears Holdings will ask a bankruptcy judge today if it can proceed with liquidation after it could not reach an agreement on chairman Edward Lampert's $4.4 billion takeover bid, people familiar with the matter said, potentially spelling the end for the 126-year-old U.S. department store chain.
