Memorial Day is a federal holiday to remember the people who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. On Monday, May 27, the American Legion Post 584 and Big Bear Valley Marine Corps League Detachment 1038 host a program commemorating the sacrifices of military personnel.

The 2019 Memorial Day ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Guest speakers include Big Bear Lake mayor Randall Putz, County 3rd District field representative Jim Miller and State Asemblyman Jay Obernolte.

Keynote speaker is Major Kurtis Kjobech of the Marine Tactics and Operation Group Training Command in Twentynine Palms. Kjobech was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal two times, the Navy and Marine Corpos Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Devie and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Kjobech returned to Twentynine Palms in 2018 to serve as the Intelligence Division Officer-in-charge for the Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group.

The public is invited to join veterans and families of service personnel, past and present to participate in the procession and ceremony at Veterans Park in Big Bear Lake, as well as the traditional decorating a flag-draped casket with flowers.

Musical performers are members of Voice Male & the Chick-a-Pellas — Alli Grabe, Delia Haston, Maggie Kubeja and Trinity Lowe, directed by Diane Sloan Kubeja. The Big Bear high school students will perform the National Anthem, “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.”

Veterans Park is at the corner of Big Bear Boulevard and Knickerbocker Road, Big Bear Lake.

The American Legion hosts a barbecue at the Legion hall immediately following the ceremony. American Legion Post No. 584 is at 41606 Big Bear Blvd., Big Bear Lake.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The Battle of Khe Sanh was conducted in northwestern Quaag Tri Province, South Vietnam with roots in 1967, and extending viciously throughout 1968. It was the longest, deadliest and most controversial battle of the Vietnam War.

During the battle, a massive aerial bombardment campaign (Operation Niagara) was launched by the United States. Over 100,000 tons of bombs. Five tons of bombs for every one of the 20,000 NVA soldiers in the fight. President Johnson was determined to hold Khe Sanh at all costs. The jungles surrounding Khe Sanh were burned and bombed barren and Khe Sanh became the major news headline coming out of Vietnam in late March 1968. The cost on American lives lost has been estimated to be around 1000 with NVA loses ten times that number.
