On August 7, 2019, Zachary Castaneda, who is a gang member, went on a stabbing spree killing four people and wounded two others across two Southern California cities. He had been out on bail for a charge last month of carrying a concealed dagger.

Castaneda killed two people in an apartment complex he used to live in. According to the police the surveillance cameras caught some of the carnage.

“We have a video showing him attacking these people and conducting these murders.”

He also robbed a bakery, where the owner, Dona Beltran, avoided a potentially violent confrontation because she was in her car charging her mobile phone. She told the police that she saw the man get out of a Mercedes and went into the business. She followed him inside to offer help but when she saw him try to open the cash register she kept quiet and ran out of the shop yelling she was getting robbed. She took refuge in a nearby dental office and Castaneda ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about $200, she said.

Updates on the SoCal stabbing spree: Police say the suspect, Zachary Castaneda, was gang member who was released early from prison as result of A.B. 109, an initiative to cut state prison population.

One of the victims, Helmuth Hauprich, 62, was described by his son, Erwin Hauprich as a hard-working immigrant originally from Romania. Hauprich said his father called him on Wednesday and told him his Garden Grove apartment had been burglarized. His passport, green card, sword collection and even a dining table were taken. He added that his father never called back and he went to check on him after hearing there had been a stabbing at the complex. He said that he was told by a police officer that his father had been taken to hospital where he died and that even his father’s roommate was also killed in the apartment.

He stabbed a 54-year-old employee at an insurance business. According to a surveillance video released on Thursday it shows a man in a hoodie entering the office, confronting the woman as she sits at a desk, then suddenly pulling two knives — one of which appears to be a butcher knife — and stabbing at her at least a dozen times as she throws up her hands to defend herself. The woman then gets up and runs into a corner, blocking the man by putting two chairs between them. He then appears to steal something from the office and leaves.

He also attacked a man at a Chevron station. According to the lieutenant the man was stabbed in the back and “his nose was nearly severed off his face.” He was hospitalized in stable condition.

The police said she was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. According to the Orange County coroner’s office, he had also killed a man identified as Robert Parker, 58, of Orange, who died at the 7-Eleven in Santa Ana.

The officials said that Pascual Rioja Lorenzo, 39, of Garden Grove, who worked at a nearby Subway restaurant, also had been fatally stabbed during a robbery.
