Jellylorum1 day(s) ago The burros in Big Bear now are the ones that in the 1990s were moved well east of the valley, out towards Pioneertown. They wandered back to Big Bear several years ago.
At that time, most Big Bear burros were captured and taken to the BLM facility near Ridgecrest. A few were adopted by Big Bear residents; my neighbors at that time adopted one. Several had to be euthanized due to founder, caused by people feeding them dog kibble, alfalfa, and other inappropriate foods.
There were other issues at that time, including several being killed on the highway. I had a close call myself, when two of them jumped off the hillside like deer and landed in front of my truck.
Walkermuggz1 day(s) ago Donkeys are roamers. Probably easier to round them up in lower elevations. Instead place’s like horse thief canyon and other places where the terrain was more difficult.
Bearable1 day(s) ago Yeah, I get the mining Nexus.
But as I remember the Burro races, the participants had to capture a wild Burro in the desert and drag it in to town.
It was a three day deal and a LOT more whiskey drank than water!
Walkermuggz1 day(s) ago Well more mid 19th century lol. I’m mean 1850s.
Walkermuggz1 day(s) ago Bearable, the donkeys weren’t dragged up here for races. They were turned out by minors in the early 19th century. Do to either no gold production and or things of that nature. They left the animals behind because they could no longer take care of them. Or it was easier to leave with out them. They are part of the past mining culture of Big Bear.
Bearable1 day(s) ago Well, my grandfather built the cabin in the 40s. I've only been coming up here since 1054, so I don't think I'll be packing up too soon...
When the guys would drag em up from the desert for the Burro races, that was fun!
But their presence here has just gotten out of hand.
They need to be thinned/cropped/ relocated.
Why would anyone love "our" donkeys???
holeinbow1 day(s) ago Bearable, we love and look out for our donkeys, let it be you who who goes to the preserve for ornery donkey haters...
BootsNBridles1 day(s) ago Bet the burros have been here longer than you Bearable! Pack up- we'll send a UHaul!
